Taking the pulse of the stars

Learn about our efforts to explore the properties of young and extraordinary stars using ground and space-based telescopes.

Watching stars over time is what we do.

On the face of it, our work is relatively simple: acquire repeated images and spectra of thousands of stars that make up our Galactic neighborhood. By measuring changes in light output on many different timescales, we can detect and analyze a myriad of phenomena, from stellar rotation to the dynamics of nascent exoplanet systems. While most stars are too far away for us to “see” what is going on at or around their surfaces, time domain studies provide access to these close-in regions.
